We understand that families have different educational needs and preferences. We currently offer a full school schedule that consists of the following components:
Core Academic Program
Monday - Thursday; Ages 5-11
We currently have three classes with plans to open a fourth classroom in 2017-2018. The Coho Class is for students age 5-6 (dismisses at 1pm), the Kokanee Class is for ages 6-7, the Chinook Class serves ages 7-9 and our Raven Class will be for ages 9-11.
The Core Academic Program uses the full strength of our learning community to focus on student development of core academic, social-emotional growth, creativity and problem-solving concepts and skills. The schedule includes literacy workshops, math workshops, social-emotional lessons and the use of broad interdisciplinary themes, projects and field trips to encourage deep exploration. We foster community building and social development by using the Caring School Community Curriculum and supporting communication, conflict resolution, compassion for all and leadership practice. There are also opportunities throughout the week for all students to interact and participate in our cross-class “Buddy” program.
We believe children need concrete, varied avenues to express themselves and that all human beings have an innate desire to connect with the natural environment. Every child participates in our Outdoor Program and spend 2-3 hours outside each week at Seahurst Park in Burien. The Outdoor Program includes outdoor skill-building, hiking, nature-study, observation and journaling. The Outdoor Program provides ample time for our budding naturalists and teachers regularly integrate science and social studies into the regular school day.
We offer weekly "Explorations" classes that focus on creative pursuits and topics have included a variety of topics including Theater, Drawing/Painting, Clay, Beginner Builders, Knitting, Cooking, Lego Challenges and Music.
Field trips are an important part of curriculum so that we can take learning out of the classroom and student typically participate in 6-10 study-related field trips per year.
Friday Enrichment Program
Fridays 8:30-noon; Open to Homeschoolers
The purpose of this program is to offer an opportunity for students to expand their learning by experiencing a different yet complementary instructional style that supports the Bridge School Mission. Depending on the theme and instructor, students enrolled in this program will use and develop academic skills through an alternative creative lens.
For the 2016-2017 year we have expanded our program. The fall session offers two sections of “A Bridge to Broadway” where we are producing Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka KIDS! Musical. This program is in partnership with Hi-Liners Musical Theater. Winter and Spring sessions offer a choice of “Creative Building” or Waldorf inspired instruction in “Houses: Design and Build” and “Waldorf Language Arts.”
We also offer “Cedar Play School” for students ages 4-6, which offers an opportunity young children to have their own special space to enjoy play through creative storytelling, authentic art projects and hands on, imaginative exploration. This class meets 9:45am-12pm.
